How to Use

Open the screensaver

Load the page and the flight starts immediately. There is nothing to click, install or configure before the stars start streaming past.

Tap for a new heading

Click or tap anywhere and the ship picks a fresh random course and surges forward for a moment before easing back to cruise speed.

Adjust to taste

Tap the gear button in the bottom-right corner to set cruise speed, star density, nebula density, course drift and distant galaxies. Changes apply instantly.

Let it run

Go full screen and leave it. Your settings are remembered locally and the screen stays awake while the screensaver plays.

What is the Cosmos screensaver?
It is a browser screensaver that flies you forward through an infinite starfield. Stars, star clusters, colored nebulae and distant galaxies drift past continuously while the camera follows a slowly wandering course, so it is meant to be left running for hours.
Are the star colors realistic?
Yes. Each star is assigned a spectral type using the real abundances found near the Sun — about three quarters are cool M dwarfs and hot O stars are almost nonexistent — and its color is derived from the blackbody curve for that temperature, from deep orange-red up to blue-white.
Does it ever loop or restart?
No. The star field wraps around the camera so the flight is genuinely endless, and the course keeps drifting, so you never see the same view twice.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs entirely in your browser with WebGL. There is no download, no plugin and no account to create.
Will my settings be saved?
Cruise speed, star density, nebula density, course drift and the galaxy toggle are saved in your browser's local storage. Nothing is sent to a server.
Does it work on phones and tablets?
Yes. On touch devices the star count is automatically capped and the distant galaxy layer is turned off to keep the animation smooth, and the settings panel uses large touch-friendly controls.
Is it safe to leave on an OLED screen?
The whole image is in constant motion, and the overall color temperature also breathes across an eight to twelve minute cycle, so no pixel stays the same for long.
