Physically Colored Stars

Stars are sampled at real spectral-type abundances and colored by blackbody temperature, dimming as the aurora brightens.

What is this aurora screensaver?

It is a browser-based simulation of the aurora borealis seen from high in the polar sky, with no ground or horizon in the frame. The glowing curtains are computed volumetrically in real time rather than played back from a video or texture.

Is it free?

Yes. It is completely free, with no ads, no signup and no login. Just open the page and watch.

Do the colors mean anything?

Yes. Green comes from atomic oxygen at 557.7nm around 100–200km, the crimson top is oxygen at 630nm above 200km, and the violet and magenta lower fringe is nitrogen, which only appears during strong activity — exactly as in real aurorae.

Does it ever repeat?

No. Curtain shapes, substorm timings and intensities are all randomized continuously, so the sky never plays the same sequence twice.

Will it work on my phone?

Yes. On phones the raymarch step count, star count and shader detail are reduced automatically to keep it smooth, and the layout adapts to portrait screens.

What if my device has no WebGL?

It falls back to a simplified Canvas 2D aurora with the same green, crimson and violet palette and the same substorm cycle.
