What is the Matrix code rain?

It is the cascade of glowing green characters from the opening of The Matrix — columns of half-width Japanese katakana, digits and symbols falling down a black screen. It has become one of the most recognisable images in science fiction and a favourite screensaver.

Why are the Japanese characters mirrored?

In the film the katakana are flipped horizontally, which is part of why the glyphs look uncanny rather than readable. This screensaver mirrors them by default, and you can turn that off in the settings.

Can I put my own text in the rain?

Yes. Choose the custom character set and type whatever you like. If you enter a phrase of two characters or more, every so often one column will drop the whole phrase in order, like a hidden message surfacing in the rain.

Is it free?

Yes. Every screensaver on WebScreen is completely free, with no ads and no signup.

Are my settings saved?

Speed, glyph size, trail, color, character set and your custom characters are stored in your browser's local storage. Nothing is sent to a server.

Is it safe to leave running for hours?

Yes. The rain is drawn incrementally on a canvas with fixed-size buffers, it pauses automatically in a background tab, and the color drifts very slowly over several minutes so no pixel stays the same, which helps protect against burn-in. Where the browser supports it, the page also keeps your display awake.
